The town comes alive every year around March, when Lath Mar holi (the color of festivals as fight with bamboo sticks between the girls of Barsana and boys of Nandgaon) is played here. This is truly a remarkable time to visit here. As per census 2001, the population of town is 9215.

    Cultural Significance:

The proper name of Barsana is Vrishbhanupur.Vrishbhanu was the father of Radha Rani and he was the founder of Barsana. The name Barsana is an aberration of the Sanskrit compound Brahma-Sanu meaning Brahma’s hill. According to Varah Puran, Brahma ji performed great austerities and requested Lord Hari to bestow the benediction upon him, so that he may be able to behold the sweet pastimes of Radha and Krishna. Thus he was ordered to come to Barsana and assume the form of a hill to fulfill his desire. The town is situated at the feet of an elevation, which is originally dedicated to God Brahma. The four peaks of this elevation are regarded as four heads of Brahma. The peaks are named as Bhanugarh, Dangarh, Vilasgarh and Mangarh. The gorgeous and world famous temple of Laadli Ji (Radha Rani) is located at Bhanugarh.
